Rants and raves from the belly of the Billy

Clyde "Funky Drummer" Stubblefield

So last Saturday I attended Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know? live at JKH hall of performing arts in Springbilly. I've been a fan of the show ever since I can remember so naturally I jumped at the chance to get tickets. Little did I know that the most sampled man on the planet would be on stage.

For those of you who don't know Clyde "Funky Drummer" Stubblefield is the drummer on a Mr James Brown's Funky Drummer cut. That break has been sampled by nearly all my favorite rappers.
I think there was a rule that you couldn't release an album in 90's without sampling from Funky Drummer.

That song alone has been sampled by:

  • 2 Live Crew
  • A Tribe Called Quest
  • Above the Law
  • Beastie Boys
  • Big Daddy Kane

James Brown even sampled that song on"She Looks All Types A' Good".
Could you imagine a world without:
"Run's House", "Original Gangster","Read These Nikes", "We Want Eazy", "Where I'm From", "Shadrach", "Oodles of O's", "Bring the Noise", "Fight the Power" or "Fuck the Police"???

No way, No How that's a world I don't want any part of!!!

With that being said you can imagine why I was so stoked to meet Mr. Stubblefield.

I couldn't believe how many people at that show didn't know who Clyde was. I was so shocked that I got so much time with this legend that I yelled out "Clyde Stubblefield ya'll, The most sampled man on the PLANET, he even played with James Brown!!" to which Clyde responded "James Brown played with me".

I saw a PBS show about sampling recently that did a piece about him. Cool! I wanted to go too, but lacked the $$$...
Why the hidden face?
